Black Seal Reimagined
This piece was created in collaboration with graphic artist Domico Watson for Goslings Rum, reinterpreting one of Bermuda’s most iconic brands through a contemporary cultural lens.
The Goslings Black Seal bottle is instantly recognizable. It carries history, family legacy, and the weight of a product that has become synonymous with Bermuda itself. Rather than alter its identity, we chose to frame it inside a layered visual language that reflects the vibrancy, movement, and creative pulse of the island today.
The artwork fuses silkscreen-inspired graphics, archival references, bold color blocking, and street-influenced typography. Bright, saturated tones sit in contrast to the deep molasses black of the rum, while the dripping seal across the neck becomes both literal and symbolic. It references tradition, authenticity, and preservation, but also transformation. Heritage is not static. It evolves.
The sea lion mark, historic stamps, and fragments of Goslings’ visual history are deconstructed and reassembled into a new composition. The result is controlled chaos, a conversation between legacy and contemporary culture. The bottle remains classic. The surrounding language becomes expressive.
Working alongside Domico allowed us to push the graphic tension further. His command of bold typographic layering and modern composition brought a digital sharpness to the analog, screen-print aesthetic that anchors my practice. Together, we created a piece that sits comfortably between fine art and commercial design.
This work is about more than branding. It is about ownership of narrative. It asks how an island brand can live in a global visual conversation without losing its roots.
A reinterpretation of tradition.
A collision of heritage and street culture.
A Bermudian icon seen through a contemporary lens.
