Django

Django positions the Gombey as guardian and symbol of cultural resilience. Mixed media and gold leaf elevate the figure beyond performance into legacy. Subtle tension in the background speaks to cultural erosion, while the Gombey stands firm, defiant, and enduring.

Ayo!! Ayo!! Ayo!!

The Gombey isn’t decoration to me. He’s rhythm. He’s resistance. He’s coded history passed down through movement and sound. So when I built this piece, I wanted him to stand still. Centered. Not performing, just existing.

There are subtle references layered in, influences that press in over time. Culture is constantly tested. It absorbs, adapts, sometimes erodes.

Depending on how the light hits it, the piece shifts. That matters. Culture shifts too. Perspective changes everything.

I named it Django as a nod to defiance and autonomy. This Gombey isn’t passive. He stands his ground, even when the environment around him changes.

For me this piece asks a simple question.
What is culture?

Django doesn’t shout. He just stands there. Firm.

Ayo!!! Ayo!!! Ayo!!!
